Letters That Never Return

White, Dave. Beach Dog. June 15, 2024, Dave White Illustrations.
I never know what to say.
A memory of longing decays,
Splintering in my chest,
Its edges are sharper with each breath.
Putting my love on paper doesn’t take it away—
It amplifies the sting,
Like salt on a wound,
I can’t help but reopen.
Moving on feels like an infection,
Spreading through the open cavity of my being.
You read my words as if you understand,
But I’m lost.
I’m adrift in the memory of what could have been,
Trying to gather the shattered pieces of myself.
Empty, I dance,
A shadow whisked into the void.
The dream’s ending, a fevered waking,
A plea unanswered.
My feelings spilled out,
But they are never caught.
I give them freely,
Still, they vanish into silence,
Like letters of longing sent into the abyss,
Never to be returned.

A World of Shadows and Silence
In Distant Planet and Darkness Descends, Dave White and Kiana Jimenez craft parallel visions of isolation and loss. The alien cliffs under a red sun mirror the poem’s suffocating night, both capturing the vast emptiness of worlds abandoned and the despair of hope extinguished, yet still lingering in shadow.
